But there is a hidden element beneath your feet that dictates whether that beautiful bathroom lasts for decades or becomes a structural nightmare within months.

What is Screed and What is it Made From?
In simple terms, a floor screed is a flat, engineered bed laid directly over your concrete slab or structural flooring. It acts as the foundational level that sits underneath your waterproofing membranes and final floor tiles.
Traditional bathroom screed is made from a precise, semi-dry mix of sand and cement (usually a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of clean, graded sharp sand to Portland cement), mixed with just enough water so it holds its shape when squeezed in your hand. This is known in the trade as a "dry-pack" or "semi-dry" bed.
Unlike self-leveling compounds which flow like water to find a perfectly flat plane, a sand-and-cement screed must be manually shoveled, screeded with a straightedge, and tightly compacted into place to form precise, engineered slopes.
The Law of Gravity: Falls and Australian Standards
A bathroom floor can never be truly level. Because water needs to drain efficiently away from your walls and fixtures, the screed must be sloped smoothly toward your floor wastes.
In Australia, these slopes are strictly governed by AS 3740 (Waterproofing of domestic wet areas). The standard mandates specific minimum gradients (falls) depending on the zone of your bathroom:

Screeding looks deceptively simple to an untrained eye, but it is actually one of the hardest physical and technical skills for a tiler to master.
Many basic contractors get it wrong because they treat it like a generic mud bed rather than a piece of structural geometry. Common mistakes include:
Improper Compaction: If the sand-and-cement mix isn’t beaten and compacted firmly into the floor, the screed will remain weak and hollow inside, leading to cracking later on.
The "Dish" Effect: Inexperienced tilers often accidentally create a bowl or dish shape around the waste rather than a flat, consistent triangular plane, making it impossible to lay large tiles flat.
Rushing the Mix: Getting the water-to-cement ratio wrong results in a screed that either cures too quickly and crumbles, or holds too much moisture, delaying the waterproofing phase.

What Happens When a Screed Goes Wrong?
If your renovation team shortcuts the screeding process, the consequences are catastrophic, expensive, and usually require a complete tear-out to fix.
Water Pooling & Stagnation: If the falls are inadequate or uneven, water will pool on your shower floor. It won't drain away, leaving slimy, unsafe wet patches that attract mold, grout discoloration, and bad odors.
Tile "Lippage": If the screed isn't dead-flat along its sloping planes, large-format tiles cannot sit flush. You’ll end up with "lippage"—where the sharp edge of one tile sits higher than the next, creating a massive trip hazard and a cheap-looking finish.
Waterproofing Failure & Structural Rot: When water puddles and cannot escape through the waste, it creates constant hydrostatic pressure on your waterproofing membrane.
